War Bulletin

I picked up my bible and opened it to this.  Zechariah 12:1-14  The Message ”  God’s message concerning Israel, God’s Decree-the very God who threw the skies into space, set earth on a firm foundation, and breathed his own life into men and women:  “Watch for this: I’m about to turn Jerusalem into a cup of strong drink that will have the people who have set siege to Judah and Jerusalem staggering in a drunken stupor.  On the Big Day, I’ll turn Jerusalem into a huge stone blocking the way for everyone.  All who try to lift it will rupture themselves.  All the pagan nations will come together and try to get rid of it.  On the Big Day-this is God speaking- I’ll throw all the war horses into a crazed panic, and their riders along with them.  But I’ll keep my eye on Judah, watching out for her at the same time that I make the enemy horses go blind.  The families of Judah will then realize, ‘Why, our leaders are strong and able through God-of-the-Angel-armies, their personal God’.  On the Big Day I’ll turn the families of Judah into something like a burning match in a tinder dry forest, like a fiercely flaming torch in a barn full of hay.  They’ll burn up everything and everyone in sight-people to the right, people to the left-while Jerusalem fills up with people moving in and making themselves at home-home again in Jerusalem.  I, God, will begin by restoring the common households of Judah so that the glory of David’s family and the leaders in Jerusalem won’t overshadow the ordinary people in Judah.  On the Big Day, I’ll look after everyone who lives in Jerusalem so that the lowliest, weakest person will be as glorious as David and the family of David itself will be godlike, like the Angel of God leading the people.  On the Big Day, I’ll make a clean sweep of all the godless nations that fought against Jerusalem.  Next I’ll deal with the family of David and those who live in Jerusalem.  I’ll pour a spirit of grace and prayer over them.  They’ll then be able to recognize me as the One they so grievously wounded-that piercing spear thrust! And they’ll weep–Oh how they’ll weep!  Deep mourning as a parent grieving the loss of the firstborn child.  The lamentation in Jerusalem that day will be massive, as famous as the lamentation over Hadad-Rimmon on the fields of Megiddo:
Everyone will weep and grieve,
the land and everyone in it:
The family of David off by itself
and their women off by themselves:
The family of Nathan off by itself
and their women off by themselves:
The family of Levi off by itself
and their women off by themselves:
The family of Shimei off by itself
and their women off by themselves:
And all the rest of the families off by themselves
and their women off by themselves.””

Confession

“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.  The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.”  James 5:16

FAITH ALWAYS PLEASES GOD,

EVEN IF IT PROMPTS AN OFF-TARGET

PETITION.  WE ALL ERR IN MANY

WAYS.  LET US ERR

ON THE SIDE OF FAITH.

Father God, according to Your Word, without faith it is impossible to please You, because
anyone who comes to You must believe that You exist and that You reward those who
earnestly seek You (Heb. 11:6).

Lord, I want to please You.  Build faith in me so my life will honor the life of Your Son at
all times, in every way.

Help me not be like the ancient Israelites who willfully put You to the test (Ps. 78:18).
They did not believe in You or trust in Your deliverance even after all the wonders You
had shown them (Ps. 78:22).

Please swell my soul with belief, and help me to trust emphatically in Your deliverance.

Our Mission on Earth

Why are we here?  What did God create us to do?  If you’ve ever found yourself wondering that, please read on.  This touched me today.

Matthew 10:5-42 The Message

Jesus sent his twelve harvest hands out with this charge.  “Don’t begin by traveling to some far off place to convert unbelievers.  And don’t try to be dramatic by tackling some public enemy.  Go to the lost, confused people right here in the neighborhood.  Tell them that the kingdom is here.  Bring health to the sick.  Raise the dead.  Touch the untouchables.  Kick out the demons.  You have been treated generously, so live generously.  Don’t think you have to put on a fund-raising campaign before you start.  You don’t need a lot of equipment.  You are the equipment, and all you need to keep that going is three meals a day.  Travel light.  When you enter a town or village, don’t insist on staying in a luxury inn.  Get a modest place with some modest people, and be content there until you leave.  When you knock on a door, be courteous in your greeting.  If they welcome you, be gentle in your conversation.  If they don’t welcome you, quietly withdraw.  Don’t make a scene.  Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.  You can be sure that on Judgment Day they’ll be mighty sorry-but it’s no concern of yours now.  Stay alert.  This is hazardous work I’m assigning you.  You’re going to be like sheep running through a wolf pack, so don’t call attention to yourselves.  Be as cunning as a snake, inoffensive as a dove.  Don’t be naive.  Some people will impugn your motives, others will smear your reputation-just because you believe in me.  Don’t be upset when they haul you before the civil authorities.  Without knowing it, they’ve done you-and me-a favor, given you a platform for preaching the kingdom news!  And don’t worry about what you’ll say or how you’ll say it.  The right words will be there; the Spirit of your Father will supply the words.  When people realize it is the living God you are presenting and not some idol that makes them feel good, they are going to turn on you, even people in your own family.  There is a great irony here: proclaiming so much love, experiencing so much hate!  But don’t quit.  Don’t cave in.  It is all well worth it in the end.  It is not success you are after in such times but survival.  Be survivors!  Before you’ve run out of options, the Son of Man will have arrived.  A student doesn’t get a better desk than her teacher.  A laborer doesn’t make more money than his boss.  Be content-pleased, even-when you, my students, my harvest hands, get the same treatment I get.  If they call me, the Master, ‘Dungface,’ what can the workers expect?  Don’t be intimidated.  Eventually everything is going to be out in the open, and everyone will know how things really are.  So don’t hesitate to go public now.  Don’t be bluffed into silence by the threats of bullies.  There’s nothing they can do to your soul, your core being.  Save your fear for God, who holds your entire life-body and soul-in his hands.  What’s the price of a pet canary?  Some loose change, right?  And God cares what happens to it even more than you do.  He pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail-even numbering the hairs on your head!  So don’t be intimidated by all this bully talk.  You’re worth more than a million canaries.  Stand up for me against world opinion and I’ll stand up for you before my Father in heaven.  If you turn tail and run, do you think I’ll cover for you?  Don’t think I’ve come to make life cozy.  I’ve come to cut-make a sharp knife cut between son and father, daughter and mother, bride and mother-in-law-cut throught these cozy domestic arrangements and free you for God.  Well-meaning family members can be your worst enemies.  If you prefer father or mother over me, you don’t deserve me.  If you prefer son or daughter over me, you don’t deserve me.  If you don’t go all the way with me, through thick and thin, you don’t deserve me.  If your first concern is to look after yourself, you’ll never find yourself.  But if you forget about yourself and look to me, you’ll find both yourself and me.  We are intimately linked in this harvest work.  Anyone who accepts what you do, accepts me, the One who sent you.  Anyone who accepts what I do accepts my Father, who sent me.  Accepting a messenger of God is as good as being God’s messenger.  Accepting someone’s help is as good as giving someone help.  This is a large work I’ve called you into, but don’t be overwhelmed by it.  It’s best to start small.  Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty for instance.  The smallest act of giving or receiving makes you a true apprentice.  You won’t lose out on a thing.”

Sums it up for me!

Courage

I can remember being my daughters age.  My BFF Amy and I, whom I no longer am in contact with but that’s a whole nother story, would sit and watch horrible scary movies.  Freddie and Jason were on the screen alot.  We’d scream and laugh, cover our eyes and yell at the heroine not to go upstairs!

I guess you could say I had the living daylights scared out of me, and now I can’t stand to watch that kind of thing.  Give me a psychological thriller or romantic comedy anytime!

Brooke is into the scary movies now.  She has one little friend who loves to watch them too.  A few weeks ago they saw one, and Brooke slept with her light on for 4 days.  Her friend slept on the floor in her parents room.  We laughed and made fun of them, but I can remember that fear and anxiety.  I struggle with it myself at times.

When Brian travels away from home for business, it’s difficult for me to go to sleep.  I check and double check the doors to make sure they’re locked.  Every little noise seems amplified, and scary when he’s not here.  I’m alone and even more responsible for the safety of my children.  The night before last I really struggled with it.  And then I prayed for a hedge of protection, and gave my fears away.

I was once told that the Bible says Do not fear 365 times.  That’s once for each day of the year!  So I just wanted to share some of the verses I found that will bless you wth courage.

“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you.  He will not leave you nor forsake you.”  Deuteronomy 31:6  NKJV

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name, you are mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.  When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”  Isaiah 43:1-2 NIV

So we can choose courage and pray.  Ask God to give you courage, and then trust Him.  Last night I slept much better!

A David Song

Psalm 16:1-11

1-2  Keep me safe, O God,
I’ve run for dear life to You.
I say to GOD, “Be my Lord!”
Without You, nothing makes sense.

3  And these God-chosen lives all around-
what splendid friends they make!

4  Don’t just go shopping for a god.
Gods are not for sale.
I swear I’ll never treat god-names
like brand-names.

5-6  My choice is You, GOD, first and only.
And now I find I’m Your choice!
You set me up with a house and yard.
And then You made me Your heir!

7-8  The wise counsel God gives when I’m awake
is confirmed by my sleeping heart.
Day and night I’ll stick with God;
I’ve got a good thing going and I’m not letting go.

9-10  I’m happy from the inside out,
and from the outside in, I’m firmly formed.
You canceled my ticket to hell-
that’s not my destination!

11  Now You’ve got my feet on the life path,
all radiant from the shining of Your face.
Ever since You took my hand,
I’m on the right way.

The Message

A David Prayer

Psalm 17:1-15             1-2  Listen while I build my case, God,

the most honest prayer You’ll ever hear.

Show the world I’m innocent-

in Your heart You know I am.

3  Go ahead, examine me from inside out,

surprise me in the middle of the night-

You’ll find I’m just what I say I am.

My words don’t run loose.

4-5  I’m not trying to get my way

in the world’s way.

I’m trying to get your way,

Your Word’s way.

I’m staying on Your trail;

I’m putting one foot

in front of the other.

I’m not giving up.

6-7  I call to You, God, because I’m sure of an answer.

So- answer! bend Your ear! listen sharp!

Paint grace-graffiti on the fences;

take in Your frightened children who

are running from the neighborhood bullies

straight to You.

8-9  Keep Your eye on me;

hide me under Your cool wing feathers

From the wicked who are out to get me,

from mortal enemies closing in.

10-14  Their hearts are hard as nails,

their mouths blast hot air.

They are after me, nipping my heels,

determined to bring me down,

Lions ready to rip me apart,

young lions poised to pounce.

Up, GOD: beard them! break them!

By Your sword, free me from their clutches;

Barehanded, GOD, break these mortals,

these flat-earth people who can’t think beyond today.

I’d like to see their bellies

swollen with famine food,

the weeds they’ve sown

harvested and baked into famine bread,

with second helpings for their children

and crusts for their babies to chew on.

15  And me?  I plan on looking

You full in the face.  When I get up,

I’ll see Your full stature

and live heaven on earth.

The Message

90 Day Bible Reading-Isaiah

Isaiah was a prophet and one of God’s greatest messengers.  He tried to tell the people to focus on God, He is the one true thing, and He will never leave us.  The prophecies cover before, during, and after the exile.  The Kings who trusted God experienced peace, but the kings who didn’t experienced disaster.  God revealed His plans and asked everyone to follow them.  The book of Isaiah demonstrates that God is trustworthy.  Will  you follow Him?

Is. 1:16-20  Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.

Is. 55:6-7Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near.

90 Day Bible Reading- Song of Songs

I have to admit, this was a hard one for me.  I really wanted to go to my regular bible and read the notes so I could understand.  It was hard for me to follow the love poems without a little explanation.  The underlying tone is all about love and sex, how powerful and important they are in our lives, and that’s how God made us.  It’s not a bad thing!  We are to be disciplined in keeping it in our marriage.  The sanctity of the marriage is where God created it to be.  A few key verses-Song of Songs 2:7 “Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.”  SOS-8:6-7 “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, it’s jealousy unyielding as the grave.  It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.  7Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it away.  If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly scorned.”

90 Day Bible Reading- Ecclesiastes

The search for the meaning of life.  The king of Israel thought happiness came from success.  He found success, but not happiness.  Success was meaningless, and not permanent.  Neither is money, wealth, pleasure or fame.  It all sounds like things we strive for, doesn’t it?  We strive for, because we focus on ourselves.  I think what Ecclesiastes is teaching us, is how to live a God centered life.  Focus on the fact that everything that we have is a gift from God.  Our troubles also come from the hand of God, but for those we should give thanks too.  He never promised a trouble free life.  We need to adjust our expectations if we’re always falling short of the goal, and that makes us unhappy.  We can learn lessons from the adversity that is dealt to us.  Make the best of it and go on.  Focus on what’s ahead of you.  Enjoy life, and enjoy what you have.  It’s a great gift from God.
